Jacques PUCHERAN

1817-1895

Jacques PUCHERAN was born on June 2nd 1817 in Clairac. Son of Pierre Pucheran and Marie Serres, his wife, sister of the great anatomist Étienne Renaud Augustin Serres, also a native of Clairac. He took part in the Astrolabe expedition from 1837 to 1840, organised by Jules Dumont d'Urville.
Doctor of Medicine (1841), zoologist and naturalist at the Natural History Museum of Paris, he is also a member of the Lisbon Academy, the Zoological Society of London, the Ornithological Society of Germany, the Philomathic Society of Paris and that of Verdun, the Anthropological Society of Paris, the Natural History Society of Moselle, the Society of Agriculture, Sciences and Arts of Agen, the Comice agricole d'Agen.
Appointed Knight of the Order of Notre Dame de la Conception of Villa-Viçosa (Portugal) in 1858, he was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by decree of August 15, 1864. He died on January 13, 1895 in Port-Sainte-Marie (Lot-et-Garonne).
