Since our establishment, in the beginning of 2018, we have generated proposals to improve the knowledge on heritage and history of Clairac. But much more is possible, so we are interested to hear your wishes and desires, and let's together generate an Association we all like!
First of all, this website, a living site that expresses what our association wants to be: to provide members with documentation that is now scattered in various public or private archives. Databases exist, but they remain too often confidential: the website of the Association give you the references and, if necessary, the instructions for use.
In addition to an interactive heritage map, our site offers virtual tours of Clairac, both in its past and present. We intend to highlight issues like:
cultivations that have made the town so rich,
exceptional men and women who were born or lived there and who have sometimes been famous outside its borders,
a virtual museum of paintings , drawings or photographs of Clairac in the 19th and 20th centuries,
heritage items scattered along streets or nearby roads,
an interactive map that allows visitors to appreciate the heritage, but also the hiking and cycling paths
the abbey, of course, whose destiny extends beyond its borders since for nearly two centuries it was attached to the chapter of St. John Lateran in Rome,
postcards, which are a mine of information for those who can read them in detail,
“formal documents” which reveal Clairac's commercial activities. We can learn a lot by studying the bill of a merchant in Clairac a century or more ago!
The site also offers links to other associations in and around Clairac, and also in France and abroad, with similar interests, or with complementary information.
The Society of Friends of Clairac has also engaged in concrete actions, such as the coordination of the second conference, in 2018 at the Salle du Lot, on the theme of The Reform in Clairac, 16th and 17th century, in collaboration with the town hall, the Academic Society of Agen and the Departmental Archives of Lot-et-Garonne ; on this occasion, several renowned researchers shared the results of their work. A third conference is planned for 2023: Clairac in the 18th century .
2021 sawn the commemoration of the 4th centenary of the siege of Clairac by Louis XIII: the last week of July and the first week of August staged “Clairac aux 400 coups!” to celebrate this anniversary in style.
A work is committed around the memory of the Clairacais “dead for France” which for some have known a singular destiny and whose name is forever engraved on the monument of the public garden. 2022 will see the publication of the book of these poilus, for the centenary of the erection of the monument of the sculptor Eugène Delpech.
As part of the Halle de Clairac, we organize exhibitions dedicated to Clairac and its history: The children of Clairac , Clairac's shops or Building in Clairac .
A vast collection of old photographs and postcards could give birth to a book on the past of Clairac.
The Société des amis de Clairac regularly sends its members a newsletter intended to create a link between the members, to inform them about the actions, and to publish unpublished articles.
The summer general meetings are an opportunity to organize a friendly picnic in the country setting of old properties in Clairac.
With the good will of the members, an inventory of the remarkable elements of Clairac's heritage is proposed, in order to promote them to the inhabitants of Clairac and visitors.
It is also with the memory of the Clairacais, through the members of the Society, that a reflection can be launched on how to locate and identify the archives available on Clairac; not only the written memory, but also the oral memory that our elders still preserve. In short, many paths just waiting to be cleared and can be opened to us if we are many!
Last but not least, the Société des amis de Clairac was recognized as having a general interest in June 2019, allowing its benefactors to benefit from a tax rebate whereby they can deduct their membership from their income taxes.
Join the Association by signing up and getting others to sign up as well!
